Animal Society veröffentlichte Ende 2022 den Bericht über das routinemäßige Töten von Hühner- und Entenküken in der Europäischen Union. Anlass war die geplante Überarbeitung der europäischen Tierschutzgesetzgebung, um sie an den aktuellen Stand der Wissenschaft anzupassen.

Jährlich tötet die Geflügelindustrie weltweit rund 6,5 Milliarden frisch geschlüpfte männliche Hühnerküken und weibliche Entenküken – allein in der Europäischen Union waren es bis vor kurzem schätzungsweise etwa 330 Millionen Hühnerküken und 40 Millionen Entenküken.
Bis zum Jahr 2022 wurden in Deutschland etwa 40 Millionen Hühnerküken kurz nach dem Schlüpfen getötet. Seit Januar 2022 ist es verboten, Eintagsküken zu töten. Ab Januar 2024 ist es zudem nicht mehr gestattet, Hühnerembryonen ab dem 13. Bebrütungstag zu töten.
Die Küken werden getötet, weil sie wirtschaftlich als „nutzlos“ gelten. Männliche Küken legen keine Eier und setzen zu wenig Fleisch an, weibliche Enten entwickeln keine ausreichend große Leber für die Herstellung von Stopfleber. Neben der ethischen Problematik sind auch die gängigen Tötungsmethoden aus Tierschutzsicht höchst bedenklich.
Die Tiere gelten als „unbrauchbar“ und werden oft nur Stunden nach dem Schlüpfen getötet – ein ethisch problematisches Vorgehen. Auch durch Fehlkalkulationen bei der Produktion sterben viele „überschüssige“ Küken.
Der Bericht widmet sich einer ausführlichen Beschreibung der Problematik und gibt eine Übersicht über die innerhalb der Tierindustrie angedachten Alternativen. Dazu gehören die In-ovo-Geschlechtsbestimmung, die Mast männlicher Hühnerküken und die Verwendung von Zweinutzungshühnern.
Da die Kükentötung vor allem ein Symptom eines viel größeren Problems ist, nämlich der Produktion von Lebensmitteln von und aus nichtmenschlichen Tieren, erwähnt der Bericht auch pflanzliche Eiweißquellen und pflanzliche Ei-Alternativen.
