Der Verein gegen Tierfabriken untersucht die Häufigkeit der Muskelveränderung in Österreich.
Expertise for Animals unterstützte den österreichischen Verein gegen Tierfabriken (VGT) mit tierärztlichem Fachwissen bei der Erstellung des Berichts „White Striping – Vorkommen der Myopathie bei österreichischen Masthühnern”.
Der Bericht präsentiert die Ergebnisse einer Untersuchung des Vereins. Das Ziel war, die Häufigkeit von White Striping bei sogenannten Masthühnern beziehungsweise bei den untersuchten Hühnerbrustfilets abzuschätzen.

Der VGT wertete 2024 und 2025 insgesamt 296 Fotos von Hühnerbrustfilets aus verschiedenen Regionen Österreichs aus. Anhand einer festgelegten Skala bestimmten sie das Vorhandensein und den Ausprägungsgrad von White Striping. Es handelt sich hierbei um eine degenerative Muskelveränderung (Myopathie), die auch mit dem starken und schnellen Wachstum der Tiere in Verbindung gebracht wird. Die Veränderungen sind von außen als weiße Streifen auf dem Hühnerbrustfilet zu erkennen.
Bei 91,04 Prozent der Proben aus konventioneller Haltung wurde White Striping dokumentiert. Bei Proben aus ökologischen Haltungssystemen waren hingegen lediglich 4,17 Prozent betroffen. Dazwischen lagen Betriebe mit höheren Standards als in der konventionellen Haltung, sogenannte Tierwohl-Marken. Hier waren Betriebe mit schnell wachsenden Hühnern vermehrt betroffen (75 Prozent) als solche mit langsamer wachsenden Hühnern (48,15 Prozent).
Die Skaleneinteilung des VGT zeigte, dass schnell wachsende Hühner nicht nur häufiger, sondern auch stärker von White Striping betroffen sind. Dabei ist zu berücksichtigen, dass der Stichprobenumfang aus konventioneller Haltung am größten war, während die anderen Haltungssysteme nur relativ kleine Stichproben umfassten.
